We unfortunatley have become accustomed to seeing the iconic words, the most representative of the innovation triggered by grassroots initiatives, robbed from the commodifying globalised system: in our particular circumstance, the agro-industrial system. Political and media dialogue and catchwords follow in its wake. This, perpetually puts us on the rack in trying to portray our life choices and practices as ‘different’. If we are robbed of our words, how can we avoid being played down no matter what?<\/p>\n\n

Indeed the Government is now attempting a masterstroke by using the Food Sovereignty flag, (one of the flags of the international farmers’ movement) to integrate it with acceptations that have little to do with the original meaning.<\/p>\n\n

In 1996 the World Food Summit was held in Rome at the FAO.
\nIt was in this cultural hotbed that the term ‘food sovereignty’ was first coined, as a response to the prevailing economic dogmas.
