aimed at the territories of Piedmont, Liguria and Valle d’Aosta
The Annual Report on the State of Natural Capital in Italy, in its fifth edition opens by pointing out a significant constitutional novelty: the recognition among the fundamental principles of the Italian Republic, of the “protection of the environment, biodiversity and ecosystems, including in the interest of future generations.” The Report highlights the need to expand the number and size of protected natural areas and to integrate ecological corridors in order to achieve the goal of protecting at least 30 percent of land and marine areas by 2030, compared with 21.7 percent of protected land and 11.2 percent of protected marine areas today, according to ISPRA data.
National and European environmental and climate policies are inspired by the strategies of the Compagnia di San Paolo Foundation, thereby also reinforcing local choices, chief among them the city of Turin’s commitment to become net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. From these premises and based on the indications provided by the scientific literature, which recognizes investment in natural capital as an effective strategy for addressing the environmental and climate challenges of the present, the present edition of the Symbiosis call is articulated, consistent with previous editions.
The call, aimed at the territories of Piedmont, Liguria and Valle d’Aosta, supports projects designed to promote active, conscious and concrete protection of natural capital and aimed at maintaining healthy, viable and resilient natural systems.
