The Mutual Aid Group in Action: Marina’s Story and the Importance of Local Networks

by | Oct 7, 2026 | Messages from the Association

What does “mutual aid” actually mean? It means making yourself available, sharing knowledge and a helping hand, and ensuring that no one is left alone to face the challenges of rural life.

We fully endorse the “Technical and Human Report” written by Max following the event held in Bellante (TE) on August 28, together with Ciro, Marcella, and Fabrizio.

TECHNICAL AND HUMAN REPORT on the WORK carried out by the “MUTUO AIUTO” group on Friday, August 28, in Bellante (TE) at MARINA

TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION OF THE WORK PERFORMED:
Replacement and installation of a wood-burning stove; cleaning soot from the pipes and replacing those that were beyond repair. Raising and replacing the chimney cap to improve the stove’s draft. Securing the pipes with fisher anchors, screws, and wire. Using cement-based material to secure, close, and seal gaps between the house wall and the stove pipes. Repositioning and securing a section of the gutter downspout. Replacement of the external plastic water pipe damaged by hail

Provide Marina with basic instructions for cleaning and maintaining the stove.

Reflections:
Although this intervention did not initially fall under the “emergencies” category, it came to be classified as such following a contextual assessment, which determined that action was necessary to ensure that Marina could remain in her home even during the winter season.
Concerns arose from the fact that each of us had to travel many kilometers and spend many hours on the road to reach our destination; this underscores the need to encourage the creation of local networks and lines of communication among members, with the aim of establishing “active cells” at the local level that are ready to intervene in case of need.
In any case, the work that was completed and the knowledge that they had made someone happier brought deep satisfaction to the hearts and souls of those who took action.

The project team consisted of:
Ciro, Marcella, Fabrizio, and Max.
We worked well together without any misunderstandings, giving those with more experience in the specific task the freedom to use their initiative and expertise, while always being open to advice and suggestions.
An integral part of the visit was the warm evening welcome, including dinner and a place to stay, that Fabrizio and Cinzia extended to us at their home, as well as Marina’s gratitude and thoughtfulness toward us.

JOIN US AND START AN “ACTIVE CELL” IN YOUR AREA!

As Max points out in his reflections, to ensure that solidarity becomes increasingly effective and accessible, we need to create local networks and points of contact in various regions.
