European Parliament green light for deregulation of new GMOs with requirements on labeling and traceability. For the GMO-Free Italy Coalition, however, the vote remains serious.
- The European Parliament has approved the European Commission’s text to deregulate new GMOs (tea).
- MEPs approved two amendments imposing obligations on labeling and traceability.
- Indeed, the vote had to take into account the growing body of scientific literature on the potentially negative effects of teas, the impact on organic and non-GMO agriculture, and the opposition of the majority of Italian and European citizens to GMO food.
- For the GMO-Free Italy Coalition, this is a serious vote that endangers producers, consumers and the environment.
