“we call for transparency and freedom of choice through mandatory labeling and protection of GMO-free food production”
Urgent action against “deregulation of new genomic techniques” kicks off. A broad coalition of associations and organizations is mobilizing against what they see as the deregulation of the new GMOs, known in Europe as NGT (New Genomic Techniques) and in Italy renamed TEA (Tecniche di Evoluzione Assistita) “to confuse us and try to overcome the majority’s opposition to food produced by genetic engineering,” denounces the online action.
What is underway is an attempt by European institutions to almost completely liberalize new genetic engineering techniques, causing freedom of choice and transparency to disappear. In short, the new GMOs would not be indicated on the label. Neither authorized nor subject to risk assessment.
In Italy, the consumer associations Adiconsum, Adoc, Adusbef, Assoutenti, Codacons, Codici, Confconsumatori, CTCU, Federconsumatori, Lega Consumatori, Movimento Consumatori and Movimento Difesa del Cittadino support the initiative and invite citizens to participate in large numbers.
