An extremely timely bioregionalist reflection
Paraphrasing Aldo Leopold and his Thinking Like a Mountain, today it is really the case that there is a need to “think like a river basin.” Leopold’s exhortation is from the early 1940s and is an invitation to see mountains not simply as a pile of forest, mining, water, landscape, flora and fauna or leisure resources, but as a value in itself to be preserved and used with care, respecting its dynamics, connections and spirit. The same thing could be said for forests, oceans or river basins, which made headlines during the scorching summer of 2022, but only because water was struggling to flow from taps and agricultural crops were burning under the sun and water was lacking to refresh them.
