The European Commission announced Nov. 16 that it will renew the authorization of glyphosate in the European Union for another 10 years, after a vote of member states failed to reach the required qualified majority.

In support of its decision, the Commission cited a report by the European Food Safety Authority (Efsa) that the level of risk does not justify a ban on the controversial herbicide.

The current authorization for glyphosate, renewed in 2017 for five years and then extended for an additional year, expires on December 15. In the absence of an affirmative or negative vote by a qualified majority of the twenty-seven, the decision rests with the Commission.
