New GMOs: 42 Italian organizations call on MEPs to vote against them
The 42 farmers’ and organic farming, environmental, consumer and civil society organizations united in the GMO-Free Italy Coalition are launching an appeal to all Italian MEPs who will be called on Feb. 7 to vote on the proposal to deregulate GMOs obtained by New Genomic Techniques (NGT)
New GMOs, European Parliament approves deregulation
The 42 organizations of the GMO-Free Italy Coalition (including WWF, Lipu, Legambiente, Greenpeace, Federbio, Assobio, Navdanya International) have expressed deep regret over the European Parliament’s vote on deregulation, judging the elimination of risk assessment on new GMOs to be serious and against the founding elements of the European pact.

Strong concern about the developments in the proposal submitted by the EU Commission on NGT deregulation.
European proposals on seed legislation and new GMOs published
As expected, the proposal on new GMOs exempts them from the risk assessment process and the traceability and labeling requirement currently in place for all GMOs, whether old or new generation.

In anticipation of the EU Commssion’s proposal on seed reform, 38 civil society organizations from 20 European countries have signed a letter to the Commission in which they stress some key points to keep in mind. Meanwhile, in Italy, an amendment to the drought decree opens the door to open-field testing of NBTs.
