Stop Glyphosphate

da | Feb 25, 2017 | Communications

We call on the European Commission to propose to Member States a ban on glyphosate, to reform the pesticide approval procedure, and to set EU-wide mandatory reduction targets for pesticide use.

Main objectives

  • Ban glyphosate-based herbicides, exposure to which has been linked to cancer in humans, and has led to degradation of ecosystems;

  • ensure that the scientific evaluation of pesticides for EU regulatory approval is based only on published studies, which are commissioned by competent public authorities instead of the pesticide industry;

  • set EU-wide mandatory reduction targets for pesticide use, with a view to achieving a pesticide-free future.

Why is this important?

Scientific evidence showing that glyphosate is dangerous is mounting. When a farmer sprays crops with glyphosate, the chemical enters the soil, leaches into the water and residues remain in the crop — it’s in the food that we eat, the water we drink, and in our bodies.

Monsanto, Syngenta and the other pesticide companies are lobbying heavily to secure their cash cow. Let’s make sure our politicians stand up to them and protect our health and the environment, not the profits of big agri-business.

Glyphosate is only the tip of the iceberg — we need to envision a world where all chemical pesticides are phased out. Europe’s politicians need to ensure that pesticide decisions are based on open and robust science, and enact policies to reduce pesticide use and promote ecological farming (eco-friendly solutions exist!) to protect farmers, consumers and the environment.

We have a unique opportunity to kickstart this change, because in 2017 the European Union will decide whether to allow the use of glyphosate for another 15 years.

Stop glyphosate. Sign now.
